He has vast experience of teaching and research in disciplines of science including Mycology, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Plant Tissue Culture, Environmental Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Cytology, Recombinant-DNA Technology, DNA Fingerprinting, Protein Analysis, Histology and Phytogeography etc. He has supervised 28 Ph.D. thesis and 94 M.Sc., B.E. and B.Tech. dissertations. He has to his credit 22 books as author / co-author / editor, about 130 research papers, 11 popular articles and about 55 invited lectures, and is also peer reviewer of about 10 international and national journals. He has led 13 research projects funded by Dept. of Science and Technology, Dept. of Biotechnology and University Grants Commission etc.
He has been member in about 50 academic bodies of higher education institutions in different states of the country; has been resource person in scientific trainings, orientations and courses to various institutions, and also held positions in various scientific bodies. He has attended about 50 international and national science symposia, seminars etc. and has been instrumental in organizing about 30 international and national events, and is recipient of national awards from Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, and international awards from overseas bodies.
Dr. Sunil Dutta has been involved for many years in activities of the NCSTC wing of the Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India as evaluator and resource person in National Children Science Congress and other events.
